This project was to develop and build a community centre within the Parewaitai retirement village. This village was live with over 120 residence’s living around the construction site. The building had a large 400m² timber deck surrounding the building for indoor-outdoor flow and residents’ use.
Cladding was a tasteful mix of Linea weather board, solid plaster and Wanaka blend Classic stone. The structure consisted of timber framing, structural steel and prominently exposed laminated timber beams with high Skillen ceilings allowing for minimal error of angles meeting at the ceiling apex of the main lounge ceiling.
The laminated beams consisted of double members sandwiching structural brackets showing off the laminated beams cuts joining perfectly. With careful and thoughtful planning, the structural brackets were routed into the inner skin of the beam and laminated beams skins assembled independently. The end product was a stunning mixture of structural and architectural accents.
